The aroma of toasty tortillas, clinking forks–and sweet little Taytum asking me if I still had the flower she placed in my ear–succeeds our family photo shoot. Matt, sitting across from me, places Corbin in his lap as I thank everyone for inviting me out to dinner.
“It’s a much better day than last year!” Mark mentions, and it doesn’t even take me a second to realize what day it is.
I had unintentionally scheduled Matt’s family photo shoot on the exact anniversary of his tragic motorcycle accident one year later. I begin to feel bad for mindlessly scheduling the shoot on what is a blurry memory of tears, family and friends holding hands, hope, and hospital hallways. I contemplate ways to appropriately apologize when he says, “…And we’re so happy we could all be together today.”

Beautiful post by HMUA Walter Fuentes about real, beautiful women working in the modeling industry–including our very own, Bailey Culbreth.
Working in a world full of constant measures and ideals of perfection and stature can take a toll on you if your values are not firmly planted.
I am thankful for being a man that works in the beauty industry because it has offered me a glimpse into the psyche and notions of what is considered beautiful and acceptable.
Being from a Latin family, it is the norm to accept, and almost expect, color, boldness, flavor, and curves. I recall my mom’s passport photo vividly. She was in her early twenties when the photo was taken. I remember her raven black curly hair, matte porcelain skin, groomed eyebrows and turqoise eyeshadow offset by a dusty rose lipstick.

I remember eating a large sandwich at a friend’s house and coming home…

My senior shoot of Lily with the amazing Walter Fuentes!
As a hair and make up artist, I am called to be on set to make people photograph-ready.
This week was my first time being on set for high school senior portraits. I must say it was totally fun!
Lily, photographed by Nicolette Mollet, graduates this year and is a state champion in track and power lifting. She wanted to show both her athletic side and sporty side.
She looks awesome! Don’t you think?

So, this post is only somewhat actually related to me, but first off, I just wanted to post that my good friend, Paul Grass, is in an amazing band and was recently featured on American Songwriter (Written and posted yesterday by Evan Schlansky) and just wanted to share it.
The reason it’s related to me, is that I get to photograph sweet Paul and his fiancé, Charleigh (who has done hairstyling for one of my shoots in the past), next month and the cute ideas are just getting me too excited.
Please enjoy and share! :)
